History

1887: Ursuline Franciscan Congregation was started at Mangalore

1996: Social Action Programmes started in Shanthinagar Hubli for the development of women and children of Hubli slums which is later named as Navachetana Social Centre in 2002. Through this centre activities related to educational support to slum children, health education, HIV/AIDS awareness programmes and Women empowerment through SHGs is undertaken. 1500 women were organized in 105 SHGs who took up the problem of housing of the slum dwellers to be addressed through collective action.

1997:Ursuline Franciscan Congregation was decentralized into 4 provinces – Mangalore, Mysore, North and North-East Provinces for administrative purpose.

1998: Roshni Social Action was started in Hangal Taluk of Haveri District to take up Social Development and Health promotion activities. A team was appointed to carry on the proposed activities.

1998: Chaithanya community health Centre was started in Basavakalyan Taluk of Bidar District in 1998 to provide health care for the marginalized. Along with Health care social development activities of education of poor children, bridge school, SHG formation and animation, HIV/AIDS awareness is undertaken by Chaithanya Centre

1998: Sneha Sangam Centre was set up at Bijapur for the education of slum girls by providing residential facility for girls.

1999:Navachetana Special School was setup at Venur in Belthangady Taluk of Dakshina Kannda District, to provide rehabilitation services to children with special needs.

2000:SHANTHI SANDESHA TRUST is registered to undertake educational, charitable, community development and health activities in the operational area of Ursuline Franciscan Congregation, Mangalore Province.

2001: Infrastructures were setup for the social development centre at Bidar, Hubli and Hangal. Programmatic intervention agreements were done with Caritas India and Manos Unidas.

2002: Roshni Dispensary was established to provide mobile health care for villages of hangal Taluk and health education for women and children. HIV/AIDS awareness programmes were conducted in all schools and villages

2004: Strategic Plan was developed for the social action programmes in North Karnataka and a profession approach for the work is provided by a shift from welfare approach to right based approach

2008: Roshni Rehabilitation Centre for addicts was established to provide treatment and counseling for alcoholics and their dependents. New land was bought for the Rehabilitation Centre.

2010: Sukya Nidhi for supporting cancer patient was started.

2014: Resource and Development Centre on child rights started to provide consultancy for NGOs and Go working with children.
